What goals are set for this course?
For students to develop their skills in communicating visually and verbally through art.
For students to gain confidence in talking about and creating works of art.
For students to learn more about themselves through art.
For students to expand their knowledge of artists and art historical trends and periods.
Students should maintain a work portfolio on google drive with photos of their work.
What are we going to do?
Making art: In this course you will be introduced to a wide variety of art making techniques and mediums. Many assignments will be tailored to allow you to explore your interests through 3D art.
Talking about art: In class we will discuss artwork, current and historic. We will also critique, or talk about, your finished work.
Writing about art: Several times over the semester you will be asked to write about your work and the work of others. This writing could take the form of poetry, story, a persuasive piece, or an artist statement. Writing is meant to ENHANCE the art making experience and will never be used as “busy work” or punishment.
Documenting progress: Each project will be photographed and uploaded to a folder on google drive. This folder is to be maintained by the student. DO NOT TOUCH OTHER STUDENTS FOLDERS.
What am I expected to do? The following behaviors are expected from students in order to meet our goals:
Ambition: If you push yourself farther than you think you can go; you may surprise yourself with what you are able to accomplish.
Professionalism: CRAFTMANSHIP, CLEANLINESS, EFFORT. Take care of your art, clean up after your self, be kind to others, and always try your best. You are here to learn and develop art techniques.
Participation: It is not an option to not participate. End of discussion. Art is about creating and discussing. For you to reap the full benefits of this course, you need to participate in art making activities, class discussions, and writing assignments.
Open-mindedness: New thoughts and ideas are constantly arising in the art world. In order to understand, appreciate, and have the creative mind to create wonderful artwork you must be open to new ideas and experimentation. Don’t be afraid to try new things and have fun with it!
How will I be graded?
50% Projects: Final projects will be graded on craftsmanship, ambition, engagement with assignments, and your overall final product. All projects are due on the day of the critique (various dates to be announced throughout the semester). I will grade all artwork after the critique. Unexcused late work will NOT receive full credit. In order for you to complete all projects on time, you will need to work the entire class period.
25% Daily Participation: Participation is expected and essential for your success in this class. Work bell-to-bell EVERYDAY. The participation grades include in-class assignments, discussions and critiques, and sketchbook assignments. Be sure to keep all in class assignments and class notes in your sketchbook so you may receive full credit for your work.
15% Homework: Homework will be given periodically in this class. Late homework will not be accepted. Homework may involve sketching, research, or writing.
10% Growth: You will be assessed on your growth and improvement as an artist and thinker. This growth will be measured at the end of the semester by an evaluation of all your completed artwork (remember to keep everything in your portfolio). I will also consider your overall attitude and your willingness to revise your work.
What happens if I miss class? It is the responsibility of the students to make up any missed work due to an excused absence. THE TEACHER WILL NOT TELL YOU WHAT YOU MISSED: YOU MUST ASK FOR WORK. You have three days to make up any missed assignments. You should use your study hall or 9th period to make up project work. My free period is 7th.
What should I do with graded work? Work to be graded is due on the day of the critique for the current unit. ALL GRADED WORK IS TO BE KEPT IN THE SPACE ALLOCATED UNTIL THE END OF THE SEMESTER OR I TELL YOU TO TAKE IT HOME. I will need it to evaluate your growth as an artist. Artwork that is missing will lower your grade. We will be putting some projects in the art show in the Spring. Artwork will need to be left and then picked up after the art show. Art not picked up will become the property of HCS.
What supplies do I need?
You will need to bring a sketchbook. You may leave it in the classroom. We will not use it every day, but you will need it at the beginning of each project.
You will need a pencil and a black sharpie.
We will be using found objects and recycled materials. You will need 3 toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls.
Other supplies as needed. You will get ample warning to bring in supplies.
A good attitude and willingness to clean up after others and yourself.
